the story behind the blooms
There are certain themes that seem to follow us through life.
For me, one of those themes is nature.
Not in a grand or dramatic way, but in the quieter moments. The changing colours of the landscape. The way a flower opens and fades. The shifting skies outside my Tasmanian studio. The small reminders that growth is rarely linear and that beauty often exists in imperfection.
The Bloom Series began as an exploration of those ideas.
Each work starts without a fixed outcome. I am not trying to paint a flower as it appears in nature. Instead, I am interested in capturing a feeling. A memory. A moment of growth, change, hope, or resilience.
Layers are built slowly. Colours are adjusted, softened, and sometimes completely reworked. Marks are added and removed. What remains is a conversation between structure and freedom, between the recognisable and the abstract.
My background in photography and design has shaped the way I see composition and colour. Those influences continue to appear throughout the series, but the work itself is driven largely by intuition. I follow colour, movement, and emotion rather than a predetermined plan.
Living in Tasmania also plays an important role in my practice. The ever-changing light, seasonal shifts, and surrounding landscape continually influence my palette and process. There is a softness to many of these works that reflects the environment in which they are created.
The Bloom Series is ultimately about transformation.
Like nature itself, each piece represents a stage in a journey. Some feel bold and expansive. Others are quieter and more reflective. Together they form a collection that explores growth, possibility, and the beauty of becoming.
Thank you for following along.
and cheering me on.
